The Army immediately began to issue the XM16E1 (re-named M16A1 on its adoption) to infantry units but the rifle was initially delivered without adequate cleaning supplies or instructions. When the M16 reached Vietnam with U.S. troops in March 1965, reports of jamming and malfunctions in combat began to surface. Although the M14 featured a chrome-lined barrel and chamber to resist corrosion in combat conditions, neither the bore nor the chamber of the M16/XM16E1 was chrome-lined. Several documented accounts of troops killed by enemy fire with jammed rifles broken-down for cleaning eventually brought a Congressional investigation.[27]
During testing in March 1958, rainwater caused the barrels of both the ArmaLite and Winchester rifles to burst, causing the Army to once again press for a larger round, this time at .258 in (6.6 mm). Nevertheless, they suggested continued testing for cold-weather suitability in Alaska. Stoner was later asked to fly in to replace several parts, and when he arrived he found the rifles had been improperly reassembled. When he returned he was surprised to learn that they too had rejected the design even before he had arrived; their report also endorsed the .258 in (6.6 mm) round. After reading these reports, General Maxwell Taylor became dead-set against the design, and pressed for continued production of the M14.

Often the outside of the holster is broader, to help break up the outline of the handgun and prevent printing, where the outline of the gun can be seen through clothing. For pocket holsters, the external flat side is often the side with a nap, or rougher surface, to hold the holster in place when drawing the pistol.
“Concealed weapon” redirects here. For other uses, see Secret weapon.
Concealed carry (or CCW, carrying a concealed weapon) refers to the practice of carrying a handgun or other weapons in public in a concealed manner, either on one’s person or in close proximity.
The 50 states regulate this practice in a variety of ways. While there is no federal law specifically addressing the issuance of concealed carry permits, 48 states have passed laws allowing citizens to carry certain concealed firearms in public, either without a permit or after obtaining a permit from state or local law enforcement.[1] The states give different terms for licenses or permits to carry a concealed firearm, such as a Concealed Handgun License/Permit (CHL/CHP), Concealed (Defensive/Deadly) Weapon Permit/License (CDWL/CWP/CWL), Concealed Carry Permit/License (CCP/CCL), License To Carry (Firearms) (LTC/LTCF), Carry of Concealed Deadly Weapon license (CCDW), etc.

Under U.S. firearms laws, only the lower receiver of the AR-15 is considered a firearm and subject to purchasing restrictions. (This is not universally the case with rifles. On some other rifles, such as the FN-FAL, the upper is the serial-numbered part, and thus the firearm.) The upper receiver assembly is simply considered a part, and may be freely purchased and mail-ordered in most locations. This is a very attractive feature for enthusiasts, who can purchase a number of upper receivers (often in different calibers) and interchange them with the same lower receiver. However, one must be thoroughly familiar with firearms laws before doing this as it is possible to make a configuration that requires a special approval or tax stamp or a configuration that is illegal under state law.
For example, an 11″ barrel with only a pistol grip is a legal handgun in most locations. Adding a shoulder stock to an AR-15 with a barrel shorter than 16″
Fast draw is one of the fastest sports. A world class competitor can draw and fire a shot in under half a second; the current world record for open style standing blanks is 0.208 seconds–and that includes the time to react to the signal. Given that the average human reaction time is around 0.2 to 0.25 seconds, the round is over before most people can react. The reaction times of the best fast draw shooters is 0.145 seconds, which means that the gun is cocked, drawn, aimed (from the hip), and fired in just over 0.06 seconds. To establish a World Fast Draw Association record, a second shot must be fired in the same competition that is no more than 0.03 seconds slower than the first; this is intended to prevent a shot that anticipates the start signal from setting a record. In competitions where two rounds must be fired, at separate targets, less than 0.10 seconds separate the shots.

The AR-15 is based on the 7.62 mm AR-15 Accessories, designed by Eugene Stoner of the Fairchild ArmaLite corporation.[8] The AR-15 was developed as a lighter, 5.56 mm version of the AR-15 Accessories. The “AR” in AR-15 comes from the ArmaLite name. ArmaLite’s AR-1, AR-5, and some subsequent models were bolt action rifles, and there are shotguns and pistols whose model numbers also include the “AR” prefix.[8]

Concealment – it is often desirable not to alert other people of one’s being armed. A carefully designed and worn holster can make a gun virtually invisible. Almost all concealment holsters are designed to be worn with a covering garment that is part of the wearer’s everyday attire.

Aaron Zelman Interviews Len Savage Again
Our latest Talkin’ to America interview has Aaron Zelman talking once more with Len Savage, of Historic Arms. We learn even more about the BATFE lack of consistency in testing standards as well as their attempts to, even themselves, make a legal weapon into a machine gun so as to fabricate evidence for a criminal charge.
As with all Restricted firearms (including all pistols, some shotguns, and some rifles) AR-15s are only allowed to be shot at certified firing ranges. In order to legally own and transport a Restricted firearm, a citizen must also register their firearm with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and must apply for an Authorization to Transport (or ATT) permit from the RCMP Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) for their province. Additionally, the firearm must be unloaded, deactivated by a trigger or action lock, and be in a locked, opaque container during transport.[22]

The second method of operation, called direct impingement, is somewhat simplified. Here, the tube carrying the high pressure gas ported from the barrel emerges inside the action of the rifle, where it mates up with a “gas key” which is integral to the bolt carrier. Thus, the bolt carrier itself functions as a piston. The AR-15 and its military versions, the M16 and M4 Carbine, are the most common and well-known weapons which utilize this system.

In order to create such small pistols, engineering compromises need to be made, and many mouseguns lack features such as slide stops and external safeties, and few function quite as reliably as refined, full-size designs such as the M1911. The small size and mass of the pistol, and low energy of the cartridge, also can make functioning of semi-automatic versions less reliable. With the short sight radius, and low-profile, snag-resistant iron sights, which are required for meeting the needs for a deeply-concealed handgun, these guns are also difficult to shoot accurately over longer distances.
